Holiday Games

Hope you are all having a great holiday. Here are a few games to keep you busy in the car. Sweet or Sour - wave with big smiles at every car that passes if they smile or wave back you say sweet, if they do nothing or look grumpy you say sour. It doesn't sound all that fun but once you get a few sweet smiles it makes you feel a whole lot happier.
Pick a colour, choose a colour each for a car that will pass, when your car colour passes you have to count out loud as fast as you can. You keep counting until someone elses car colour passes then they start at one again. The winner is the person who can count up to the highest number before the next person starts.
Number Plate addition when a car goes past or you are following one add the numbers in the number plate to see what they make eg BMD359 3+5+9 would add to make 17 or you could make it 35+9 or any combination you like.
Alphabet find, instead of the original I spy why not only look for things beginning with each letter of the alphabet, see if you can get the whole alphabet, hope the queen is in town or you are driving past a quayside.
Silence is golden, see who can stay absolutely silent for the longest, use a timer or the odometer to measure distance. See if you can stay silent for more than 5 kilometers, then see if Mum or Dad can.

CAMP ROCKS!

What an awesome time we had at Blair Lodge Camp last week. We stayed there on Thursday night after we had stuffed ourselves with homebakes and nachos. We had some very talented people performing at our talent quest. Robots, Ambulance drivers, army guys and even some singing and dancing girls. I can't wait to see what they come up with at the real Pahoia's got Talent lunchtime competition coming up. Here are some of the photos from the camp. Thanks to Jack and co for taking them. Great to see camp through the eyes of a 6 year old.

We have been on another adventure back in time! On Thursday 9 September, Rooms 5 and 6 travelled to Mystery Creek to visit the Agricultural Heritage Museum. We enjoyed being shown around all the exhibits. We learnt about what a blacksmith did and we saw all the tools that they used to create horseshoes, tools and even bikes. We explored the very first hospital that was in the Waikato and it only had 2 rooms! This building was very special becuase it was over 100 years old and we were lucky enough to go inside a 100 year old church as well. The day was lots of fun, even in the pouring rain and Mrs Radley and Mrs Youngman said our behaviour was absolutely amazing!

We made pretzels in Room 6. We used the same ingredients used to make bread and we investigated how the mixture changed from the beginning to the end. We learnt that yeast, when mixed with warm water, helps make bread rise. We also learnt that kneading the dough to put air into it, helps the bread rise as well. We shaped our pretzels into the first letter of our names. Then we cooked them. You can see from our photos that they looked amazing and they tasted delicious!

We had a great time on our visit to Katikati Museum. We dressed up in olden day clothes and even had a school lesson like it would have been many years ago! We practised writing in link writing on a blackboard and saw lots of interesting things as we toured through the museum. It was a great trip! Term 3 Week 4

We have been busy learning in Room 6! We are discovering what life was like back in the olden days and we are going on a trip to Katikati Museum on Friday 13th August. During our visit there, we will be looking and learning about what school was like many years ago and enjoying a trip through the museum. We have also become scientists! We have been doing some experiments in our classroom. These experiments have been using materials that can be found in your kitchen. These experiments have taught us how these materials can change and it has been fun watching these changes. Come in and see us anytime to see our great learning!

Hi there! I am really happy to be teaching in this fantastic class of children. I will be in Room 6 for this term while Mrs Brown is on maternity leave. She had a gorgeous baby boy called William and he was born on 22 June. This term's topic is all about going back in time! We will be learning about what life was like many years ago and how things have changed since then. We will be going on an adventure to Katikati Museum on August 13 where we will get to do lots of exciting things. Come and visit Room 6 and say hi to us and look at what we have been up to! Room 6 have been busy doing some top secret work. They have made a beautiful quilt for Mrs Brown's baby, Mrs Brown finishes work tomorrow and will be having a few days off before the baby is due. If the baby comes on it's due date. Mrs Youngman will be working in Room 6 while Mrs Brown is on Maternity leave.

We have had two student teachers working in our class for the last few weeks and we were sad to see them go on Friday. We learned heaps from them and hope they learned heaps from us too. We wish them all the best for their teaching careers.

ANZAC day writing

We had the pleasure of a visit from a real hero last week when Mr Sparrow from Katikati came to speak to the school about his experiences in the NZ Navy.
We have been learning how to write a recount of an event we have been to. Sam and Amy wrote about our ANZAC assembly.

Here are their recounts.

ANZAC ASSEMBLY by Sam
On Friday morning we had an ANZAC service. We were up at the flagpole. We had it to remember the people who died in the war. Mr Sparrow was a soldier he went into a submarine and he went under the sea. We made red poppies in room 6 and we put them under the flagpole. I feel sad about the people who went to war and the people who died. The whole school sang the National Anthem after Mr Sparrow had talked. Every class put poppies under the flagpole then Reid raised the flag.

ANZAC SERVICE by Amy
On Friday at school we had an ANZAC service becuase that day is when we remember the people who went in the war, who dies and fought for our country. We put some poppies under the flag pole. I felt sad. In the war my Grandad almost died but he didn't so that was very good!! Mr Sparrow was a soldier and he talked about when he went to war and when he went in a submarine. After we all sang the National Anthem then Reid raised the flag.

Easter Holiday Homework

Well that is term one all but over. I hope you have a great time at home over the holidays and spend lots of time doing things together as a family. I have hidden the multi plug socket from my boys and told them no tv until they have sorted out their room. They have had a great day yesterday finding toys they forgot they even had.

In the holidays please try to read everyday work on learning to read and write the hundred words list. If you already know all of list one then go on to list two.

Have a great time and send our class an email to let us know what you have been doing during the holidays with some photos. We are working on writing recounts next term which are stories about things we have really experienced. We could do some great stories with photos to help us out.

Please keep working on recognising numbers and reading the big numbers you see when you are on the road, number plates, letterboxes, phone numbers, etc.

Term one learning

Having an awesome time in Room 6. All of us learning heaps, especially about the human body and how to be a good friend. Thanks to Michael and Harold in the Life ed caravan.
We have also been doing a few other fun things.

We really appreciate all the parents and grandparents who have made time to come and help during the morning sessions while we are doing our reading and writing. It makes a huge difference to how on task we can all be.
Photos will be added as soon as possible. But until then ma te wa.

Welcome to Room 6's blog. We have been so busy learning we have not had time to get all fancy on our blog. We will be uploading photos as we go this year and hope you will send us comments to let us know what impressed you with our learning this year. Remember our door is always open and we love having helpers in class. Can't wait to see you.

We have been using the magnetic letters to spell her words from her spelling list. These are words from the THRASS chart.

Reading book box. These are books we have already read at home and school. We know the more we read the better at reading we are going to get.

We know how important eating a healthy lunch is. We love fruit in Room 6 it helps our brains to work all afternoon for our learning.

We have been learning all about the human body come in and see our before we start learning pictures of what we think is inside our body.

DROWSLAND

Greetings to all the Drowslanders and their families.

This term is off to a flying start looks like a whole term since I managed to get online and put a few new things on. We have been hard at work with our imagination creating the world known as Drowsland. Just thought those of you who are not from there might like to have a few facts about the place just to help.

HISTORICAL FACTS
Drowsland is the place where sword fighters are found. They have lived in caves in the foothills of the Varoxx mountains for centuries. They are currently ruled by Queen Shigur, chosen from a long line of royalty. She has numerous hideouts in the high hills and a summer residence by the estuary of the Esernisheen river. The Drowsland people have 4 main languages English, Te Reo Maori, Chinese and Spanish. This is because of their central location and their coastal lands. They have their own belief system which is based on the belief of day following night and the seasons changing. They have an oral story telling tradition which has allowed them to keep their languages alive. They have more recently started to record these stories in cave art for fear of the Varox people taking over their land and the stories being lost.

The main crops grown are wheat for bread and green vegetables for nourishment. These are grown on the lower mountain foothills. Everyone in Drowsland is allowed as much land as they need for their family to live off, no one owns the land it is shared and used wisely. If one family is unable through illness to tend to their own vegetable plot the neighbours will step in to help. Any spare fruit and vegetables are brought to the Queen who distributes them to her people fairly.

HOW TO TELL THE AGE OF A DROWSLANDER
When a child is born in Drowsland they are given a snake to keep. When this snake first sheds it's skin the skin is used to create a belt for the child. This belt has a bead threaded onto it on each birthday. The beads can also be given for great achievements, for example saving a life, creating a new garden, having a baby, being succesful in battle. The beads are all specific to a task or experience. The beads are all drawn and recorded in the BOOK OF BEADS.

Keep an eye out for some photos coming soon of Drowsland visitors to room 6 and some of the artifacts they have brought to show.

week three

wow another week over, just had a great walk in the rain. I came home tonight to find all my peaches blown off the tree. I am waiting till the rain stops to go out and pick them up. I will be up all night bottling peaches for the winter. That is what being resourceful is all about. Using the resources we have wisely. I could just leave them to rot on the ground but there is nothing nicer to eat on a cold winter day than a bowl of golden goodness. It just makes the winter day seem all sunny and warm when you get the real taste of summer from a peach. I still have one jar left from last year, I didn't want to eat it incase this year's crop didn't go good. Maybe if the kids in room six carry on working as hard as they have been then they will be able to share them with me later in the year.

Here are James and Terry doing what Deisel Dean tells them to. They showed respect for him even though they didn't think he really should have been bossing them around.

We are learning the meaning of some of our school vision words. RESPECT is one of them. Our class know respect means listening to your parents and teachers and following instructions without moaning and complaining about it.

We are also learning about communication. COMMUNICATION is another one of the vision words. We are lucky that we have many communication tools we can use to help us get our message across. Athletes missing

I have been out and about looking for athletes but there are none about. Perhaps the children can tell me why? They must all be away somewhere? But where? Bring in or post on here some information about where they might be. You could even take some pictures of any famous or infamous athletes if you see them out and about in Tauranga.

Welcome back all, to a wet and windy term start. Hope none of you had too many worried kids after our little lesson on the effects of floods on landforms. Didn't realise there would be quite so much rain in the following days. will get on to adding some interesting photos soon, just got back online today yee haa. Hope to see a few of you at parent interviews next week just give juanita a ring at the office and make an appointment.

Hi guys would you believe what Lydia (Alfie's Mum) saw when she was out and about the other day. Who would have known there were super heroes living just minutes from the school.

How are you all

getting on with the THRASS homework, we have had some great conversations in the staff room and class room about how to fit words onto the chart. If you are having these conversations at home it will be helping to make those spelling words stick in the long term memory and create links to make it easier to make good spelling choices in the future.
Swimming skills are becoming better and better, some future olympians there, fantastic to see all of the confidence levels rising with the whole class now able to get their feet off the bottom.
We have been enjoying the life education caravan and have been learning about the air we breathe and how important it is to have clean air to breathe, all you smokers out there better watch out for some information coming your way soon. The class have been meeting with "Mrs Puff" on a Monday afternoon. Ask your kids to tell you about her lifestyle choices.

starting the term

Wow a couple of weeks gone already, we have had a great time learning about each other. We have been using our THRASS charts and enjoying the challenges that brings. We have started doing our class spelling and reading. We have been swimming every afternoon and we are all improving our technique and confidence in the water. With our term focus on literacy we have been reading Fantastic Mr Fox. He is a hero to his family. Who are your heroes and role models? Are you a role model for anyone?

We have been looking at super heroes. Mrs Brown recently spotted wonder woman doing her shopping at countdown, apologies for the blurred photo wonderwoman was going so fast it was hard to get a clear shot. Keep your eyes peeled incase there are any more superheroes out and about in town.
